Red Tulips for Afghan Women & Girls

Red tulips – which grow wild after rainfall in drought areas – have been adopted as a symbol of hope, and a way for people to show support, for women and girls of Afghanistan who are suffering under the oppressive Taliban regime.

Denied anything other than a basic education, with healthcare severely compromised as older female doctors are not replaced, women and girls are subject to severe restrictions on their personal freedom.

Our Federation would like to raise awareness of this issue by giving out knitted and crocheted red tulips at the Westmorland Show in September.

Along with the tulips will be a label with more information about appropriate organisations who offer help and support.

If you would like to get involved by knitting or crocheting a red tulip, we have included the patterns in with the July/August Secretaries’ mailing.

Tulips can be made individually or why not organise a session with keen crafters in your own WI to get a good batch together?

Please send or bring your tulips to the CWFWI Office by Friday 28th August so that we can label them up ready for distribution at the Show.
